A MOTION related to the transfer of retired vanpool vans to nonprofit organizations and local governments to meet the needs of low-income, seniors or young people or people with disabilities.
Body
WHEREAS, King County provides transit services to its residents to increase mobility options and reduce traffic congestion and related environmental degradation, and
WHEREAS, the provision of passenger vans to nonprofit organizations and local governments serving individuals with limited resources and mobility options can support those goals and provide significant public benefits, and
WHEREAS, high-quality passenger vans retaining value and utility are periodically retired from the county's vanpool program, and
WHEREAS, the metropolitan King County council has previously transferred retired vans to agencies serving low-income, seniors, disabled and young people, and
WHEREAS, K.C.C. 4.56.100 states that each year, "the Metro transit department shall make available retired passenger vans for exclusive use by nonprofit organizations or local governments that are able to address the mobility needs of low-income, seniors or young people or people with disabilities," and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the operational, health and safety changes organizations have made in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 emergency, Ordinance 19241 provides that, "for the duration of the public emergency declared by the executive in response to the coronavirus disease 2019, the specific plans may also include use of the van to transport goods or supplies, including, but not limited to, food, clothing, school supplies or medical equipment, to serve the needs of low-income, seniors or young people or people with disabilities";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County: The transfer of a retired vanpool passenger van to each of the following agencies is hereby approved:
