A MOTION declaring that it is the policy of King County to support the eyeglass crusade of the Federal Way Kiwanis Club, and urging donations of used glasses and hearing aids to Kiwanis for repair and donation to the poor and infirm.

WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of Federal Way conducts an annual eyeglass crusade to collect old glasses of all types, including reading glasses, prescription glasses and sunglasses, as well as used hearing aids, for the purpose of donating them to individuals in developing countries, and
WHEREAS, this program uses the skill and dedication of local ophthalmologist Dr. John Jarstad and his staff to test and repair these essential items for vision and hearing and to deliver them to patients in developing countries, and
WHEREAS, the eyeglass crusade meets important goals to improve the way of life for disadvantaged persons since, as stated by Kiwanis, "helping someone in the third world to see changes lives so much for the better," and
WHEREAS, the crusade runs during the month of September 2003, and Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, as the elected councilmember from Federal Way, will accept at his office eyeglass and hearing aid donations to Kiwanis;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
It is the policy of King County to support the annual eyeglass crusade of the Kiwanis Club of Federal Way and to encourage county employees and officials to donate eyeglasses and hearing aids to the crusade.
