Title

A MOTION authorizing the King County executive to accept a donation of twenty-five thousand dollars, to meet the needs of recently arrived refugees impacted by events in Afghanistan.

Body

                     WHEREAS, in fall 2021 King County welcomed nearly one hundred seventy five refugees impacted by events in Afghanistan to Federal Way as they resettle in the United States, and

                     WHEREAS, King County provided temporary housing for the refugees at a county-owned former hotel property while the refugees await placement in permanent housing, and invested County funds in language supports and grants to community-based organizations supporting the refugees, and

                     WHEREAS, those refugees have arrived without resources for basic needs like clothing, children's items, personal care items and food, and

                     WHEREAS, under K.C.C. chapter 2.80, gifts, bequests and donations that exceed two thousand dollars require acceptance on behalf of King County by the King County council by motion, and

                     WHEREAS, the donor, Amazon.com, Inc., would like to make the donation to King County to meet basic needs of refugees impacted by events in Afghanistan who are staying at the county-owned former hotel;

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:

                     The King County executive is authorized to accept a donation of twenty-five thousand dollars from Amazon.com, Inc., to meet the needs of recently arrived refugees impacted by events in Afghanistan.  The department of community and human services is

responsible for handling the administrative matters associated with this donation and is authorized to execute such other documents as are necessary to complete the transaction.
