AN ORDINANCE renaming White Center Park in honor of Steve Cox, to recognize his service, dedication and profound influence in the White Center community.

STATEMENT OF FACTS:
1. Steve Cox grew up in the Shorewood neighborhood, just south of White Center and graduated from Evergreen High School, where he played on the varsity basketball team.
2. As a young athlete, Steve Cox played baseball at White Center Park.
3. Steve Cox earned a law degree and served honorably as a deputy prosecutor in King, Franklin and Adams counties.
4. Steve Cox, hoping to effect greater change in his community, decided to pursue a career in law enforcement.
5. Steve Cox served nine years as a King County Sheriff's Deputy, in Precinct Four, which includes the White Center community.
6. King County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox served the last four years as the White Center storefront officer.
7. Steve Cox was a property owner and community activist in White Center, and served as an elected member and president of the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council.
8. In 2005, Steve Cox received the Community Builder Award from the Seattle Neighborhood Group for his service to the White Center community.
9. Steve Cox epitomized the concept of community policing and was known for his many acts of kindness in the line of duty.
10. King County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox, forty-six years old, was fatally shot in the line of duty on the morning of December 2, 2006, by a suspect in an assault he was investigating.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KING COUNTY:
SECTION 1. We do hereby honor and memorialize Steve Cox by renaming White Center Park as Steve Cox Memorial Park.
