Reports on Special and Outside Committees | ||||

Mr. Brewer reported on his participation on the Law Library Board. He serves as designee of Chair
Sullivan; the other four members of the Board are two judges of the Superior Court and two attorneys appointed by the County Bar Association. He explained that the Board is the governing body for the King County Law Library, which is the first public law library to receive a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant's purpose is to assist in establishing the training center for computer and internet legal research. Mr. Phillips reported on the Executive Finance Committee, which has the primary responsibility to direct the investment of county treasury funds. He indicated that to date there are over ninety county investment pool participants. As of May 9, 2002 the total amount in the county managed investment pool was a little over three billion dollars. The committee meets once a month to review the pool's performance. Mr. Phillips reported on the WRIA 8 Forum, which has been meeting on a regular basis regarding the endangered species listing for chinook salmon. At its recent meeting, the Forum received an update on actions being taken in the short term to deal with salmon recovery and a long term salmon conservation plan. He indicated the Forum is the governing body comprised of elected officials throughout the region, and meets on a regular basis to review the work of a steering committee that meets monthly to help chart the course for salmon recovery. Mr. Pelz reported on the recent special meeting of the Transportation Committee. The committee was briefed by the Washington State Department of Transportation on the regional transportation package cost estimate issues. He indicated there also was a panel of elected officials from some of the larger cities, who discussed roads, road challenges and the regional package. Mr. Pelz stated that a second briefing by WSDOT is scheduled for May 30, 6:30 p.m. in Kirkland's council chambers. He encouraged the public to attend. Mr. McKenna informed the Council that a special invitation to the meeting has been extended to colleagues from the city of Seattle and suburban cities. He also indicated that the group from King, Pierce and Snohomish Counties that has been meeting on the regional transportation package is meeting on May 21 at 9:00 a.m. in Lakewood, hosted by Pierce County Council. Mr. McKenna expects a report of the results of that meeting will be made to the Council shortly after. |
