Title
A MOTION encouraging the King County executive to allow King County personnel to assist with the devastating aftermaths of Hurricane Katrina.
Body
WHEREAS, on August 29, 2005, a hurricane and storm surge devastated the coastal regions of the Southeast United States including parts of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, and
WHEREAS, the hurricane and storm surge resulted in many deaths and left thousands homeless and without food, clean water, electricity, communications and medical assistance, and
WHEREAS, the employees of King County possess unique skills, which could allow them to be of assistance to rescue, recovery and relief efforts, and
WHEREAS it is possible that the needs of those suffering could be addressed by the reassignment of King County personnel, and
WHEREAS, King County personnel provide a valuable service daily to the citizens of King County which can be shared with other parts of the country, and
WHEREAS, first hand experience gained by emergency management personnel will benefit residents of King County should a natural disaster strike, and
WHEREAS, the King County emergency management team has been nationally recognized and could offer comprehensive and helpful insight and advice to the organizations that are providing disaster-relief-aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
A. The King County executive is hereby authorized to allow King County personnel to assist in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts throughout the United States; and
B. The King County executive is hereby encouraged to continue to pay these
employees their county wages, for a limited time, while they are assisting in the relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts in the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
