Title
A MOTION calling upon the executive to propose appropriation of funds from the council reserve in the current expense subfund to the housing opportunity fund to provide housing and support programs for the homeless.
Body
WHEREAS, homelessness is recognized as a growing problem in King County and elsewhere in the nation, and
WHEREAS, based on the 2004 One Night Count, the Seattle/King County Coalition for the Homeless currently estimates that on any given night there are approximately 8,300 people who are homeless in King County, and
WHEREAS, the citizens' advisory commission on homeless encampments recommended that the county aggressively identify and pursue real, long-term solutions to homelessness, and
WHEREAS, the Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness calls for full implementation by 2014 of an intervention system that immediately  houses those who experience homelessness to eliminate the need for  tent cities and encampments in King County, and
WHEREAS, for fourteen years the Aloha Inn is an example of the best in transitional housing programs, helping hundreds of homeless men and women find permanent, affordable housing, and
WHEREAS, a relatively small investment in the housing opportunity fund by the county today will substantially reduce future costs, and
WHEREAS, the 2005 adopted budget financial plan for the current expense subfund includes a metropolitan King County Council reserve of 3.4 million dollars,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
The metropolitan King County council calls upon the executive to propose appropriation of up to 3.4 million dollars from the council reserve in the current expense

subfund to the housing opportunity fund to provide housing and support programs for the homeless.
