A MOTION authorizing the executive to accept a donation of one thousand dollars from Pierce county's Violence Against Women Act elder abuse grant to King County Judicial Administration in support of the Elder Abuse Conference to be held September 13, 14 and 15, 2004.

WHEREAS, the King County department of judicial administration ("DJA") is conducting a statewide Elder Abuse Conference to train law enforcement and prosecutors on recognizing and responding to elder abuse, and
WHEREAS, Pierce county's Violence Against Women Act ("VAWA") elder abuse grant, an organization with no contractual obligations with King County, has a vested interest in educating law enforcement on the serious issue of elder abuse, and
WHEREAS, the VAWA elder abuse grant voluntarily, without coercion or inducement, wishes to donate one thousand dollars to the Elder Abuse Conference, and
WHEREAS, this donation will legitimately enhance the county's ability to serve in the public's interest and the knowledge gained at the conference by attendees will benefit the elderly throughout Washington state, and
WHEREAS, this donation is intended neither to influence a particular county action, nor to affect the performance of official duties and responsibilities by the DJA staff, and
WHEREAS, King County government is a charitable organization as defined by the federal Internal Revenue Service and King County as an entity can accept gifts;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
The King County department of judicial administration is authorized to accept a
donation of one thousand dollars from the Pierce county's Violence Against Women Act elder abuse grant.
