A MOTION authorizing the executive to accept a donation of five thousand dollars from the American Association of Retired Persons to King County judicial administration in support of the Elder Abuse Conference to be held Sept. 13, 14 and 15, 2004.

      WHEREAS, King County department of judicial administration ("DJA") is conducting a statewide Elder Abuse Conference to train law enforcement and prosecutors on recognizing and responding to elder abuse, and
      WHEREAS, the American Association of Retired Persons, a private organization with no contractual obligations with the county, has a vested interest in educating law enforcement on the serious issue of elder abuse, and
      WHEREAS, The American Association of Retired Persons voluntarily, without coercion or inducement, wished to donate five thousand dollars to the Elder Abuse Conference, and
      WHEREAS, this donation will legitimately enhance the county's ability to serve in the public's interest and the knowledge gained at the conference by attendees will benefit the elderly throughout Washington state, and
      WHEREAS, this donation is intended neither to influence a particular county action, nor to affect the performance of official duties and DJA staff, and
      WHEREAS, King County government is a charitable organization as defined by the federal Internal Revenue Service and King County as an entity can accept gifts;
      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
 
      The King County department of judicial administration is authorized to accept a donation of five thousand dollars from the American Association of Retired Persons.
