A MOTION in support of the Vietnamese-American community and its display of a yellow flag with three red stripes, also known as the Vietnamese-American Heritage and Freedom flag.

WHEREAS, the end of the Vietnam conflict produced an exodus of over two million Vietnamese who sought a new life, and
WHEREAS, many of these refugees settled in King County, and an estimated forty-eight thousand Vietnamese-Americans and residents of Vietnamese descent live in and have a long history of contributing to the business, economic development and culture of our county, and
WHEREAS, Vietnamese-Americans have distinguished themselves through community service and in our nation's armed forces, and
WHEREAS, Vietnamese-Americans own and operate approximately 3,000 businesses in Washington that have gross sales and receipts of four hundred forty-six million dollars annually, pay fifty-six million dollars in taxes per year and employ many Washingtonians, and
WHEREAS, Vietnamese-Americans have excelled in engineering, government, architecture, education, medicine, acting, singing, sculpture and writing, and
WHEREAS, King County's quality of life is greatly enhanced by the Vietnamese-American community in our county, and
WHEREAS the vast majority of Vietnamese-Americans embrace the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam with three red stripes on a yellow background as a symbol of their heritage and promotion of freedom and democracy in their country of origin;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
A. King County recognizes the yellow flag with three red stripes as the heritage flag of the Vietnamese-American community throughout King County and supports the display of this flag at community events and at appropriate locations in King County; and
B. King County encourages other cities and counties as well as the Washington

state legislature to also recognize the yellow flag with three red stripes a...
