Title
A MOTION relating to Referendum Bill 51, which will appear on the November 2002 general election ballot.
Body
      WHEREAS, the state legislature referred Referendum Bill 51 to the November 2002 general election ballot primarily to raise the gas tax and other revenue to fund transportation projects, and
      WHEREAS, if passed, Referendum Bill 51 is projected to raise $7.7 billion over the next ten years for transportation projects around the state, including several important highway improvement projects within King County, and
      WHEREAS, some of these important highway improvements are intended to address safety issues related to the SR-99 viaduct and the SR-520 projects, and
      WHEREAS, Referendum Bill 51 would direct critical funds to the I-405, SR 509, SR 167, and SR 520 corridors, and
      WHEREAS, Referendum Bill 51 would provide funding for local road improvement projects within King County, and
      WHEREAS, Referendum Bill 51 would also provide transit funding distributed to the Puget Sound region, including Metro Transit, and
      WHEREAS, in addition to funds for Metro Transit, additional transit-related funding would be provided for paratransit service, rural mobility grants, vanpool expansion, commute trip reduction and park and ride lots, and
      WHEREAS, Referendum Bill 51 would help King County accomplish its growth management goals by improving its transportation infrastructure, and
      WHEREAS, Referendum Bill 51 would improve the quality of life of King County residents, who will be available to spend more time with their families, and
      WHEREAS, the King County council recognizes that the state and regional transportation system is important to keeping both the state's and the region's economy strong and its businesses competitive, and in creating jobs;

      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
      The council endorses the passage of Referendum Bill 51.
