Title
A MOTION declaring the council's intent to conduct a nationwide search to appoint a director of the King County office of law enforcement oversight and confirming the appointment of Adrienne Wat as successor and interim director of the office of law enforcement oversight.
Body
WHEREAS, Section 265 of the King County Charter states that the director of OLEO shall serve a four-year term and until a successor is appointed, and
WHEREAS, on August 18, 2020, the employment and administration committee of the King County council recommended that the current director of the King County office of law enforcement oversight ("OLEO") not be reappointed to another term, and
WHEREAS, by adopting Motion XXXX (Proposed Motion 2020-0287), the council declared its intent to not reappoint the current OLEO director, and
WHEREAS, K.C.C. 2.75.030 states that the director of OLEO shall be selected by the council through a nationwide search through a merit-based selection process, and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the county and its citizens and is critical to the effective running of OLEO that an interim director be appointed as successor to the current director of OLEO while a nationwide search for qualified candidates for the position can be conducted and concluded, and
WHEREAS, effective September 15, 2020, a new director of OLEO will be serving on an interim basis as successor, until a new director is appointed by the council;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
A. The council directs the council chief of staff to take the steps necessary to conduct a nationwide search to identify potential candidates so the council can appoint a new director of OLEO to a four-year term in accordance with K.C.C. 2.75.030 and Section 265 of the King County Charter.
B. The appointment of Adrienne Wat as the successor and interim director of the office of law enforcement oversight, effective September 15, 2020, is confirmed....
