Title

AN ORDINANCE proposing an amendment to the King County Charter, to more broadly prohibit discrimination on the basis of family caregiver, military or veteran status in county employment and in county contracting with nongovernmental entities; amending Section 840 of the King County Charter; and submitting the same to the voters of the county for their ratification or rejection at the next general election to be held in this county occurring more than forty-five days after the enactment of this ordinance.

                     BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KING COUNTY:

                     SECTION 1. There shall be submitted to the qualified voters of King County for their ratification or rejection at the next general election to be held in this county occurring more than forty-five days after the enactment of this ordinance, an amendment to Section 840 of the King County Charter to read as follows:

                     Section 840 Antidiscrimination.

                     There shall be no discrimination in employment or compensation of county officers or employees on account of sex, race, color, national origin, religious affiliation, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression ((or)), age except by minimum age  and retirement provisions, status as a family caregiver, military status or status as a veteran who was honorably discharged or who was discharged solely as a result of the person's sexual orientation or gender identity or expression, and the county shall not enter into any contract with any person, firm, organization, corporation or other nongovernmental entity that discriminates on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, religious affiliation, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression ((or)), age except by minimum age and retirement provisions, status as a family caregiver, military status or status as a veteran who was honorably discharged or who was discharged solely as a result of the person's sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

                     SECTION 2.  The clerk of the council shall certify the proposition to the director of elections, in substantially the following form, with such additions, deletions or modifications as may be required by the prosecuting attorney:
