Title

A GUIDELINE AND RECOMMENDATION to inform jurisdictions working at regional, county and city levels on housing strategies and policies in coordination with communities to improve the health of their communities while preserving housing affordability throughout King County in compliance with the 2012 King County Countywide Planning Policies on housing.

Body

The Board of Health adopts a guideline that is intended to acknowledge the connections between housing and health and inform jurisdictions working at regional, county and city levels on housing strategies and policies in coordination with communities to improve the health of all communities in King County.

This Guideline and Recommendation focuses on the leading causes of housing-related disease, injury and death in King County, which are asthma, falls and unintentional poisonings.

Section I of the Guideline and Recommendation entitled Local Policy Actions, are intended to be considered by jurisdictions with the unique needs of the communities.

Section II of the Guideline and Recommendation entitled Cross Sector Partnership Opportunities, emphasize that jurisdictions are part of a broader metropolitan area with sub-regional and sub-county interconnected services and structures where the need for cross sector partnerships are crucial to create and maintain healthy housing.

The King County Board of Health Guideline and Recommendation on Healthy Housing and related background information and references are included in Attachment A and can be considered and useful through an overall policy strategy that considers equity in housing opportunities and balances the need to address unhealthy housing conditions with preservation and expansion of affordable housing stock in King County.  The King County Board of Health strongly recommends that robust and culturally

responsive community engagement strategies are implemented to inform, direct and shape policies throughout all stages of development.
