Title

A MOTION directing the King County executive to assess and improve the safety and security of the regional trails network.

Body

                     WHEREAS, King County owns and operates one of the nation's most extensive multiuse trail networks, with more than one hundred seventy-five miles of trails for pedestrians, joggers, bicyclists and equestrians, and

                     WHEREAS, these regional trails are enjoyed by thousands of King County residents every day, and

                     WHEREAS, these regional trails provide opportunities for recreation, non-motorized travel and enjoyment of nature, as well as vital connections between communities, workplaces, parks and other destinations, and

                     WHEREAS, these regional trails have been developed and are maintained with investments made by King County residents through voter-approved parks, trails and open space tax levies, and

                     WHEREAS, ensuring that King County residents and visitors are able to use regional trails safely and securely is a crucial duty of King County and one that informs the siting, design, development, maintenance and user rules for King County's regional trails;

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:

                     A.  The King County council directs the executive to assess the safety and security of the regional trails network, with a focus on segregating incompatible uses and, in particular, for trails located adjacent to roads, protecting trail users from motor vehicles.

                     B.  The executive is requested to use this assessment to guide maintenance investments on and near regional trails and, if necessary, to incorporate safety and security investments into planning for the next parks, trails and open space levy.
