A MOTION approving a report related to the King County sheriff's office domestic violence investigation and intervention unit in accordance with the 2015/2016 Biennial Budget Ordinance, Ordinance 17941, Section 20, Proviso P1.

                     WHEREAS, Ordinance 18110, Section 20, Proviso P1, stated that $100,000 could not be encumbered or expended until the sheriff transmitted a summary report of the domestic violence unit and a motion approving the report and the motion was passed by the council, and

                     WHEREAS, the King County council recognizes the grave toll domestic violence takes on families and their surrounding communities, and

                     WHEREAS, in 2009 the King County sheriff was forced to eliminate the domestic violence unit consisting of six detectives and two sergeants due to staffing cuts during the great recession; and

                     WHEREAS, in the 2015/2016 Biennial budget the King County council transferred funds to begin rebuilding the King County sheriff's office domestic violence unit now consisting of two detectives and one community service officer, and

WHEREAS, the King County sheriff's office domestic violence investigations and intervention unit partners with the King County prosecuting attorney's office to provide better and more thorough investigation of domestic violence crimes in King County, and

WHEREAS, in just a few short months of work the King County sheriff's office domestic violence investigations and intervention unit has already made a measurable impact in more serious charges of domestic violence assault suspects, and

                     WHEREAS, the sheriff has transmitted to the council the requested report and motion;

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:

                     The report on the domestic violence investigation and intervention unit, in

accordance with the 2015/2016 Biennial Budget Ordinance, Ordinance 17941, Section 20, Proviso P1, is hereby approved.
