Title
A MOTION authorizing Public Health - Seattle & King county to accept a donation from the Community Health Plan for the purpose of purchasing pedometers to promote the importance of physical activity.
Body
      WHEREAS, obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and
      WHEREAS, over half of King County adults are overweight or obese, and
      WHEREAS, unhealthy weight is linked with health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol, and that these and other health challenges are on the rise, and
      WHEREAS, fighting overweight and obesity is a key priority for Public Health - Seattle & King County in pursuit of its goal to promote health behavior and prevent disease, injury, disability and premature death, and
      WHEREAS, the Community Health Plan is pledging to support King County's efforts as part of Public Health Week, April 4 through 10, in promoting physical activity though walking activities, including a public challenge between the King County council and Seattle city council on which distinguished governing body will walk the most steps in a month;
      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
      The King County council authorizes Public Health - Seattle & King County to accept a one-thousand-dollar donation from the Community Health Plan for the purpose of purchasing pedometers that will be used as part of events and activities that will
 
publicize and promote the importance of incorporating physical activity in the daily lives of King County residents.
