Title
A MOTION authorizing the department of public health to accept the donation of five thousand dollars to be used to support disaster preparedness education for vulnerable populations.
Body
WHEREAS, persons with limited English proficiency are more vulnerable and experience disproportionately greater impacts during disasters, and
WHEREAS, King County is committed to equity and social justice and prioritizes impacts on people of color, low-income communities, and people with limited English proficiency, and
WHEREAS, twenty-four percent of King County residents speak a language other than English at home, and
WHEREAS, a region-wide disaster public education campaign called "what to do to make it through" is currently in place across King County, and
WHEREAS, the department of public health is a regional leader in preparing vulnerable populations for the consequences of disasters, and
WHEREAS, the Target Corporation has made a donation of five thousand dollars for purposes of supporting disaster preparedness educational materials, supplies and training in languages other than English, including American Sign Language and Braille, and
WHEREAS, under K.C.C. 2.80.010 donations of more than two thousand dollars must be accepted on behalf of King County by motion;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
The department of public health is authorized to accept a donation of five thousand dollars from Target Corporation, to be used to support disaster preparedness education for vulnerable populations.
