A MOTION confirming the appointment of Katy Kirschner as interim director of the office of law enforcement oversight.
Body
WHEREAS, Section 265 of the King County Charter states that the director of the King County office of law enforcement oversight ("OLEO") shall serve a four-year term and until a successor is appointed, and
WHEREAS, the current OLEO director has informed the King County council intends to leave the position on October 3, 2026, rendering the director's position vacant, and
WHEREAS, the council has introduced Proposed Ordinance 2026-0250, with the intent to clarify that an interim director may be appointed as successor to the current director in the event the position becomes vacant before a new director and successor has been appointed, and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the county and its residents and is critical to the effective operations of OLEO that an interim director be appointed as successor to the current director while a nationwide search for qualified candidates for the permanent director position can be conducted and concluded, and
WHEREAS, a new interim director of OLEO will serve as successor, until a new director is appointed by the council;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
The appointment of Katy Kirschner as the successor and interim director of the office of law enforcement oversight, effective immediately, is confirmed.
