Title
A MOTION declaring the week of May 31, 2004, through June 4, 2004, as Support Our Troops Week in King County.
Body
      WHEREAS, the men and women of the armed forces of the United States are currently serving at locations around the world in both peaceful and battlefield conditions to help ensure the security of the United States and our allies, and
      WHEREAS, the terrorist attacks committed on September 11, 2001, remind us of the need for international efforts to end terrorism and promote peace, and
      WHEREAS, the courage, sacrifice and commitment of the men and women in the armed forces of the United States are an inspiration for all Americans, and
      WHEREAS, the men and women of the armed forces of the United States, including reservists who have been called to active duty, face dangerous and life threatening conditions every day as they carry out their missions around the world, and
      WHEREAS, the men and women of the armed forces of the United States serve their country with honor and distinction, and
      WHEREAS, eighty-five King County employees who serve in the reserve military forces of the United States have been called to active duty and deployed to their respective units, including thirty-five still on duty, and
      WHEREAS, King County has already implemented a policy that provides for supplemental pay and continuation of benefits for employees who serve in the reserve forces and who are called to active duty, and
      WHEREAS, all King County citizens believe strongly in providing a compassionate and supportive community for those presently serving in the military and those who have served in the past, as well as the families and friends of those serving in the military and those who have served in the past, and
      WHEREAS, the National World War II Memorial was dedicated on May 29, 2004, as an expression of our nation's gratitude for those who served, especially those who gave their lives, in the armed forces to secure freedom in the world, and
      WHEREAS, on Memorial Day our nation honors the memory of the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces with distinction and honor throughout our nation's history;
      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
      That the week of May 31, 2004, through June 4, 2004, is declared "Support Our Troops Week" in King County, and King County citizens and employees are encouraged
 
to show their unwavering support and appreciation for the brave men and women presently serving and those who have served in the past in the armed forces of the United States and our allies.
