Title
A RESOLUTION recognizing King County schools achieving the HealthierUS School Challenge award by meeting standards of excellence in nutrition and physical activity.
Body
WHEREAS, obesity and overweight is a growing concern for school children in King County and the United States, and
WHEREAS, one in five children in middle and high school in King County are overweight or obese, and
WHEREAS, children who are obese are at higher risk for being obese adults and developing chronic diseases,
WHEREAS, since 2004 the King County Board of Health has engaged in policy work to address the obesity epidemic in King County, and
WHEREAS, Board of Health prior efforts include: sponsoring five countywide forums on obesity; passing Resolution 05-08, recommending a comprehensive strategy for active living, healthy eating; passing Resolution 05-08, directing the Overweight Prevention Initiative using a ten-point strategic plan; passing Regulations on menu labeling, which was R&R 10-02, and trans fat, which was R&R 07-02, using input from the Board of Health-sponsored Committee on Nutrition; promoting obesity prevention policies to school districts developed by Board of Health-sponsored School Obesity Prevention Committee; and most recently passing Healthy Vending Guidelines, which are Attachment A to G&R11-02, and
WHEREAS, the HealthierUS School Challenge is a voluntary initiative established to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity, and
WHEREAS, the HealthierUS School Challenge supports First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let's Move campaign by recognizing schools creating healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity, and
